a tradução é igual o da ana só muda ali nos smiths

Tenho certeza absoluta de que é “The Smiths were”, pois refere-se à família Smith, portanto Os Smiths, logo cita cada integrante da família. “Were” é usado para plural e “was” para singular. Com certeza é “were”.

O texto está correto porque eles estavam na fazenda e não sobre ela.

Obs. Pode-se usar On para localização quando se referir a ruas, avenidas, rodovias, parques, transportes coletivos etc.
Ex: Sherlock Holmes lived in London, on Baker Street.
