Na Antiguidade, os primeiros calendários foram inventados para que os homens pudessem se planejar em relação às estações. Como uma das primeiras civilizações, a egípcia precisou de uma forma para regular e planejar suas atividades, principalmente as agrícolas, por isso os egípcios se orientavam pelas inundações periódicas do rio Nilo, que fertilizavam as terras baixas e marcavam o começo de um novo ano agrícola. Por conhecerem a duração aproximada do ano, estabeleceram um calendário com doze meses de trinta dias cada um e, no final, havia cinco dias adicionais, dedicados a festas, perfazendo 365 dias. Ora, como, na realidade, o ano tem a duração de 365 dias e quase um quarto de dia, à medida que os anos passavam, o calendário egípcio se adiantava em relação aos fenômenos que ocorriam ao longo das estações, acumulando uma defasagem de quase seis horas a cada ano. Esse calendário, devido à sua duração fixa de 365 dias, não servia para estabelecer as datas do início das estações, e os egípcios sabiam disso. Aproximadamente dois meses …porque se sobra seis horas do dia de 365 dias , e quase um quarto do dia ….
